ITC Avant Garde Gothic is a font family based on the logo font used in the Avant Garde magazine. Herb Lubalin devised the logo concept and its companion headline typeface, and then he and Tom Carnase, a partner in Lubalin's design firm, worked together to transform the idea into a full-fledged typeface.

Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase based their 1970 typeface on Lubalin’s logo for Avant Garde magazine. The Condensed was drawn by Ed Benguiat in 1974, and obliques designed by André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt in 1977.

Unfortunately the current digital ITC version does not include these optically corrected obliques. Bitstream’s and E+F’s versions do, but lack all the ligatures and alternates.

The Works In Progress series was initiated in 2013 by the Graduate Student Association to create a collegial forum where faculty and advanced doctoral students can present current and ongoing research. Open to current students and faculty, the series aspires to facilitate conversations beyond the classroom about methodologies and research, about specific projects and interdisciplinary issues. The Works In Progress talks augment the rich intellectual exchange between students and faculty, and among colleagues, of the Institute of Fine Arts.
